I'd be most grateful if you could locate the baptism record and parents of William Martin. I have the following references:
Bosham Marriage register (PRTSOC) married Mary Anne Bunday 12/12/1857 aged 30, Labourer from Fishbourne.
His father is listed as John Martin, also a Labourer.
1861 Census: Born Sidlesham, Sussex 1829
1871 Census: Born Lyminster, Sussex, 1829
1881 Census: Born Birdham, Sussex, 1830
1891 Census: Born Chichester, Sussex 1828
1901 Census: Born Burdham, Sussex 1829
I have the transcribed Fishbourne Parish records and couldn't find William in there. I hope you can help.
Thanks in anticipation

ReplyDeleteI checked the registers for Chichester and couldn't find him in any of the parishes there. We don't have the other parishes so I can't check those.
I found a marriage licence on the Sussex Maririages CD that looks like it
could be for his parents though:
John MARTIN labourer, widower from Chichester
Sarah GASS widow from Sidlesham
The marriaged took place at Sidlesham 22/10/1816.
My best guess is that William was born in Sidlesham or Birdham and those
records are held at the West Sussex Records Office in Chichester.
Do you know if William had any siblings?
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Best wishes
Linda
Hi Linda
ReplyDeleteThanks for your efforts. It's not absolutely certain yet, but it sure supports my findings thus far.
1. In the 1841 census in Bosham, I located a William Martin b c1828 in Sussex, son of John and Sarah. He has siblings Thomas b c1826 and George b c1824.
2. In 1851, Thomas is shown with the same two parents and interestingly, what I think is a mistranscription (the original is a little unclear) a visitor called Edman Gapa. Could this be Edmund Gass?
I guess I'll have to get myself along to the Register office in Chichester for a bit of tracking.
Thanks again.
